What is Osteopathy?

First alternative medicine and manual therapy

In most Western countries, osteopathy is the first alternative medicine. 8 million people were treated in the UK every year, 20 million in France and over 65 million in the US. Similar popularity is gained in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and other parts of Asia.

What is a dysfunction or mechanical trouble?

Mechanically, all the structures of the body must move in all the directions of space. A trauma (whiplash, surgery, etc.) will alter this movement, and the structure will be "blocked" in one of the different directions: this is what is known as "dysfunction". Locally the tissues will change their density and texture. This dysfunction will cause mechanical troubles that with time, can create inflammation and sensitivity of the nervous system, which is expressed by pain or discom-fort.

What is the difference between normal and abnormal tension?

Normal tensions are the ones that respect the body's functioning. They will not damage any tissues.  All tensions that exceed the limit of the body's ability, will start to alter or damage the tissues, and are considered as abnormal.

Is osteopathy safe?

Since its creation in 1874, no accidents or injuries have been registered. Osteopathy is officially recognized by the World Health Organisation as a first tier medical practice. High qualification of osteopathic study is a warranty for quality and security. Techniques are soft and painless.

The best start for a new body

Birth is the first trauma that your body faces in life. The way you are born will define your balance and vitality for your life. The baby's body is perfectly shaped to go through delivery, but any abnormal tension can cause small traumas, which leads to dysfunction that will be expressed shortly or years later. The baby skeleton is still very flexible; this is the reason why the osteopath will be able to change the level of balance and vitality. Once the bones are ossified, we can adapt the balance, but not change it.

For which reasons should you bring your baby to an osteopath?

  • All births should be checked by an osteopath to ensure everything is balanced
  • Forceps, vacuum, other instruments
  • C-section, short and long delivery
  • Twins
  •  Abdominal hyper/hypo
  • tonicityBirth head deformation, plagiocephaly, stiff neck
  • Digestive troubles: colitis/ constipation
  • Breast feeding problems
  • Slow baby, sleeping problems
  • Allergies, asthma, bronchitis, otitis
  • Surgeries, fractures, limb deformation

Children and Teenagers

After birth the Osteopath will follow the child during all the steps of development, and prevent all troubles caused by any injury, which can disturb the psycho-motricity development. Teenagers are growing fast and it is vital to make sure that nothing disturbs their development. Scoliosis, for example can worsen during teenager years. Nowadays, orthodontic treatments are very common, and the impact can be very serious (the cranial mechanism and unbalancing the whole body).

Which troubles will bring you to your osteopath?

A women's body goes through major changes and challenges during pregnancy, and the whole environment is deeply modified: tissues, muscles, liquids, etc. Osteopathy will help a women's body to adapt smoothly to all of the physical and hormonal changes, allowing the future mother to feel comfortable and healthy.

For delivery, the body needs to be perfectly free and flexible, if not your baby will be exposed to abnormal tensions. By rebalancing the body, osteopathic treatment will eliminate abnormal tensions which are the cause of intra uterine dysfunctions of the baby.
